Phoenix Community & Youth Project was established due to the Governments Austerity Measures, which resulted in Sefton Council having to make savings of £44 Million in the financial year 2011/12 and further savings every year since and for the foreseeable future.

Sefton Councils Cabinet made the decision to reduce the funding of its Youth Service by two thirds as part of a re-organisation, after a 22 Thousand signature petition, the largest in Sefton history forced a change in the initial decision to close all their Youth Centres in April 2011. During the re-organisation it became quite clear that Stanley Youth Centre, situated in one of the main wards in which we operate would close, as well as most if not all the youth centres in Sefton. Both Stanley and Birkdale Youth Centres closed in 2012 and Meols Cop was transferred to a not for profit organisation, as these were the three youth centres covering the wider Southport area it meant there was very little youth provision in the area. We therefore established a team of trustees to set up the charitable organisation limited by Guarantee named Phoenix Community & Youth Project, which gained charitable status in2013.
